ESOL Program

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a language instruction educational program for eligible English Learners (ELs) in grades K-12 in Georgia public schools.  ESOL language instruction is focused on developing EL students’ academic English proficiency in each content area of the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE).

The goal of the ESOL language instruction program for English Learner (EL) students is to enhance both English language proficiency (ELP) and academic language skills in content areas. The program has the following objectives:

1. To develop proficiency in English across all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

2. To integrate language instruction with cognitive and academic learning, enabling students to acquire both English language skills and knowledge in various subjects.

3. To align the curriculum with the Georgia Standards of Excellence while focusing on both social and academic language proficiency.

4. To provide grade-level appropriate content for all EL students, regardless of their English proficiency level.

5. To promote collaboration and shared accountability for the success of all English Learners.

The ESOL Program aims to work with all teachers at all grade levels and administrators of ELs to provide high-quality instructional programs designed to develop proficiency in English while meeting challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards.
