Students'

PCHS Media Policies and Procedures and Services

  1. The media center is open to all students during regular school hours, Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  2. The media center is a place for school business. It is not a place to 'hang out'. Each student should be able to state and log in on the visitation log on the circulation desk, a definitive school related purpose and should be involved in that task whenever observed. If not, he/she will be sent back to class...or the office.
  3. Before school and during school hours, a student must have a hall pass from a teacher stating the purpose of the visit to the media center. Students do not need a pass after school.
  4. Upon entering the media center, all students must show their pass and student ID to the media staff and sign the log provided at the circulation desk. Upon leaving, students should sign out in the log.
  5. All food and drink should be left outside of the media center or closed and zipped in a book bag. Any food and drink found out or open will be confiscated and disposed of. The student will be sent back to class or the principal. The student is elligible for suspension.
  6. Communication between patrons should be kept to a whisper or very low volume. Laughter and other noises are just that - noise and should be kept so low no one else can hear them.
  7. Computers are to be used for academic purposes only. No games, lyrics searches, music videos, etc. are allowed. Students must show proof (on their PCHS Student ID) of a signed Internet User Agreement form being on file with the school before they will be allowed to use the computers. The use of school computers for student email is prohibited. Now, for things you can do...
  8. Books may be borrowed for two weeks and renewed twice unless reserved for another student. A fine of 5 cents a day is charged for each overdue book.
  9. Magazines (except latest issues) may be checked out for 3 days. Because of their fragile nature, special care should be taken with them. A fine of 5 cents a day will be charged for overdues.
  10. Reference materials, and vertical file materials are limited to overnight checkout. Overnight materials are charged 50 cents per day when overdue.
  11. Printing from the computers and copying from books or magazines is 5 cents per sheet for black and white, and 75 cents for color. Pages printed from the computer will come out of the printers on the circulation desk. If yours does not print, do not press "Print" again. Consult a media staff member as you will be charged for multiple copies. When researching, we suggest that you cut and paste information needed and its source from the Internet to a Word document to save copies and money. Non-research related items will be confiscated and/or charged a whopping price depending on how the media staff feels that day.
  12. Media center fines and charges of $1.00 or more must be paid before more materials may be borrowed. A hold will be placed on all student records until media fines are paid. A student must clear all fines before graduation.
    • Binders (Recycled) for Research Paper and Project are 50 cents each.
    • Books may be checked out for 2 weeks. A fine of five cents a day is charged for each overdue book.
    • Magazines (with the exception of the most current issue) may be checked out for 3 days. A fine of 5 cents a day is charged for overdue magazines.
    • Reference materials (overnight check-out only) are charged 50 cents per day when overdue. They are due back before the start of first block the following day.
    • Damaged books and materials will be charged depending upon the degree of damage but not more than the price of the item's replacement.
    • Lost books and materials will be charged the price of replacement.
    • Lamination for students is allowed when sufficient paper is available. It carries a charge of 50 cents per foot.
    • Printing and copying is a 5 cents per sheet for black and white, 75 cents per sheet for color. Students should be sure to print out only items that are school related. If you press 'Print" and do not see your copy at the circulation desk, do not press "Print" again as you will be charged for multiple copies. Ask a media staff member for help. We suggest that you cut and paste information and its source from the Internet to a Word document to save copies and money. Students should print only school related material. Other print items will be confiscated and/or charged a whopping price depending on how the media staff feels that day.
    • Technology
      • CD's are $1.00 each.
      • CD-RW's are $2.00 each.
      • Floppy Disks are 50 cents each.

Faculty and Staff

Media Policies, Procedures and Services

Your friendly and hospitable Media Center staff is happy to provide the following structure and services:

Collections - Computer Assistance - Cooperative Planning - Copying - Copyright - Equipment - Fines - Laminating - Lettering - Materials - Printing - Policies - Project Displays - Requests - Research - Sign Up and Use of the Media Center - Student Aides - Student Policies

Collections

Our collection on a particular subject may be spread over many areas of the library depending upon how the publisher chose to catalog it. In planning for classroom use of the media center, sometimes teachers ask that we pull all materials dealing with specific subjects so that time is not lost in searching for these items. Please plan with us at least 3 to 5 working days ahead of time so that we can pull them in time.

Computers

The media computers and programs are here for your use as individuals or as a class. There are about 16 computers that work at any one time and so a whole class will probably have to do some sharing or group work. In the media center and in your classroom, the following programs are available. Students are to use the media center computers for academic, school related purposes only.
  • Accelerated Math - Teachers, this is an excellent program to target individual students where they need help most. The grading is done for you. Let us tell you about it.
  • Accelerated Reader - Want to assign outside reading but don't want to grade related projects and tests? Use Accelerated Reader. Perfect for a summer reading program. We have some quizzes available in Spanish. You can make up your own quizzes to go with any text and subject. It will scramble the questions and grade it for you.
  • Inspiration - Brainstorm and web with this system.
  • Office XP (Access, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher and Word)
  • Spectrum - It's icon is a ring of color with the number 5 in the center. This is your portal to the PCHS online catalog of books, videos and other materials in the PCHS media center. Use it to search for materials while in your classroom; it tells you if the materials are available. Then come on down and check them out.

We also have purchased or have access to these web sites. You have access to them in your classroom and home also.

Bridges - An online career information system at http://cx.bridges.com which is updated every 3 days. Take an interest/aptitude quiz and find out what may be a career choice that fits you personally. Explore what it takes to pursue that job and what it pays. Get ready for your future, now. Our user name is 0016710 and our password is peach . It has excellent links located at the bottom of its copyright page to detailed descriptions of copyright law relating to different mediums.

Media Charges

Please see student fines and charges
There is no charge for teachers for black and white copies when printing from the media computers. When printing from a computer, press print only once. The copy will come from the printer that is located on the circulation desk. Check with the media personnel if you are unsuccessful. Please see student printing.

CD-RW's are $2.00 each. (teachers and students)
Disks are 50 cents each. (teachers and students)
Recycled Research Paper and Project Binders are 50 cents.

Lamination

Lamination is done by media staff on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Teachers should leave their work in the media center with their name on the back side. Media staff will laminate items.

There is no fee for teachers/staff and no limit to the number of feet that they may have laminated. They should keep in mind that there are funds for only a set amount of lamination paper and it must be shared by the total school.

Students may request lamination which will be contingent upon availability of paper. There is a fee of 50 cents per foot of lamination done for students. As the lamination paper is bout 2 feet wide, it is recommended that students pool their lamination so that they can share the cost.

Lettering

Lettering for bulletin boards, signs and displays - Teachers and students may stamp out letters, numbers and shapes using the Ellison machine or the Acu View Cutter. The position of the stamps during cutting is very important. Directions are posted for each machine on the wall over the table where the stamps are stored. This table is located in front of the conference room in the media center. Do not remove cutters or blocks from the media center.
These blocks can be used in combinations to create many objects. We have a video to demonstrate what can be done with them. They may be useful for club fund raisers.
In addition to upper and lower alphabet blocks, we currently have the following block stamps listed below. If you would like us to order a specific shape, let us know.
The media center does not provide construction paper for this purpose. If colored paper is needed, the bulletin board paper may be used.

Projects and Student Work Displays

We welcome student work for display in the media center for up to two weeks. Teachers should check with the media staff for availability of space for displays. At the end of the two weeks, teachers should send students to remove their work. Those not removed within that time period will be discarded.

Requests

For Cooperative Planning

We really would like to plan with you in order to make your use of the media center as intellectually stimulating and time efficient as poosible for you and your class. A little planning can save a lot of time and frustration...and two or three heads really can be better than one. Drop by and see us or email us the Planning form. If you email, title it "Planning - Your Name" so we will spot it and respond quickly.

For Materials

We not only welcome teacher/student requests but solicite them. This is your media center. Our desire is to fill it with the materials that you need and enjoy using. Please use the Materials Request form. We know it is often impossible to fill it out entirely so simply fill in as much information as possible. Feel free to staple catalog pages, etc. Do remember to put your name on the form so we can check with you if we need to verify the material and let you know when it arrives. The form may be emailed or delivered to the media center. If you choose to email, title it "Material Request - Your Name" so that we can spot it quickly.

When there are funds available, we do all we can to provide you with the best.

For Services

We want to help you in any way we can. Please use the Service form for service requests. The more information you provide, the better we can serve you. If you email it, title it Service Request - Your Name.

One of the services we would like to provide are mini private or small group lessons, which, along with your practice and implementation would earn SDU's. Examples would be use of the Computer Programs in classroom lessons, placing class projects, research, daily activities online. It does not have to be computer related. It may be developing a summer reading program for your students or a way to improve the silent sustained reading program for your class. It may not have anything to do with reading either. It may be devising a classroom management system or perhaps the use of more hands on materials. Come up with something you would like to learn and use in your classroom and we'll see what we can do.

Research

Research Services for teachers/staff:

Choosing a topic of interest is usually difficult. Sign up for a class period in the media center. We have archived up to 5 years of Time, U. S. News and other magazines we can pull for you and let your students browse for really creative ideas. When they find a topic they're interested in, they can check the online catalog to see if we have any books on the subject. If we don't, they can contact the Peach Public Library

We would like to help you place your research and project directives on-line so that students may access the requirements from school or home. This also makes it easy for you to tweak and reuse the projects for future classes. See one of us, to help get your classes in cyberspace like these teachers did.

Use of the Media Center

There are 3 separate calendars for reserving the Media Center, the Conference Room and Media Equipment. These calendars are located on top of the bookcase between Mrs. Simmon's and Mrs. Poole's offices.

A. Media Center - Sign up to use the media center whenever you need it to supplement your lesson. Let us help you plan for the best possible use of time and materials.

Teachers should only use the sign up book in the media center for whole class instruction in which the teacher is present and actively participating in the instruction process.

Teachers are limited to signing up for 2 consecutive days in the media center and are encouraged to sign up as far in advance as possible.

Teachers should notify the media center of cancellations as soon as possible.

Teachers may send individual students or small groups of up to 4 students to use the media center for academic purposes related to class work or to check out a book for pleasure reading. If a student(s) is sent to use a media computer for academic purposes and a teacher and his/her class are present and using the computers and none are available, the student(s) will be asked to return to class. If there are available computers, the student(s) may use them.

Students should not be sent to the media center to make up tests.

Students should not be sent to the media center because they have finished their work and have extra time.

If you have a student aide, you should partner with another teacher so that s/he has a place to go if you are absent. These students should only be sent to the media center to run errands for you.

During advisement, Mrs. Poole and Mrs. Simmons each have advisement and on appointed days, they each have a club to attend to. We ask that you limit student requests for passes to the media center during this time.

During all three lunches, we ask that you pay special attention to student requests for passes to the media center. Classes are often being conducted during this time and we have a difficult time maintaining a learning environment in the media center with so many students trying to use the media center as a place to visit during this time.

Media Equipment

Check out   -   Classroom Storage   -   Die Cuts (Lettering for Bulletin Boards)

End of the Year Returns   -   Equipment List   -   Lamination   -   Requests

Media equipment is for teacher/staff check out - not students - sorry.
If students desire to use equipment, a teacher must check it out and assume responsibility.

Your PCHS media center is here for you. After you browse our list of equipment, let us know what you need. We will do our best to get it for you. If you need for us to purchase equipment, let us know that, too. We'll also do all we can to get that for you.

Equipment Check Out

Your media center staff attempts to provide each teacher with the equipment that he/she feels necessary for his or her individual style of teaching. (Students may not check out equipment for themselves.) We try to allow you to check out for the year many items such as overheads, carts, and VCR's. Other items in high demand must be checked out only for the time needed.
When you check out equipment, we ask that you
  1. *borrow equipment from the media center - not a hall neighbor
  2. call or send for help anytime you are in doubt as to how to operate equipment.
  3. cover all equipment when not in use, especially if it is near a chalkboard. ( a large trash bag works fine)
  4. dust all equipment on a regular basis.
  5. operate the equipment yourself or allow only those students you feel truly knowledgeable and responsible to operate the equipment, remembering that you are responsible for the equipment.
  6. secure all materials in your classroom. Although digital and video cameras, LCD projectors (so darn expensive), etc are only checked out for the time needed, they should still be stored in your locked closet at all times when not in use. We have trouble with these coming up 'missing'. VCR's have also been known to move about on their own. Refer to # 3 and #4 for care.

Bad Borrowing Scene

* When you borrow from one another this is what can happen.
The item is checked out to you. You loan it to someone else. They loan it to someone else. Someone else needs it. We come to you. You go to who you loaned it to or you can't quite remember who you loaned it to last. We can't find it, but you are the last one to have it. You feel bad because you can't find it, the one who desperately needs it feels bad because he/she can't use it and we feel bad because you feel bad and we can't help someone who is in a panic. All the while, the equipment is sitting in someone's classroom on a table under a poster and is not being used at all...maybe till the end of school when everyone cleans up. In the meantime, because we were not sure if it was stolen or what and it is in high demand, we've ordered a new one with our very limited funds that were sorely needed for something else. All in all, it makes for a very complicated scene.

Good Neighbor Borrowing Scenario

Instead try this:
Mr. Neighbor: May I borrow the LCD while you're not using it 4th block?
Kind Teacher: Sure, Shanika, run down to the media center and tell them Mr. Neighbor wants to check out the LCD that's checked out in my name.
(At end of 4th block)- Mr. Neighbor: Take this to Mrs. Kind Teacher and then go to the media center and tell them to check it back out in Mrs. Kind Teacher's name.

At the end of the school year please
  1. dust all media equipment and cart.
  2. return all media equipment at the same time -
    on your cart -
labeled with your name in large letters (magic marker if possible) on a whole sheet of paper taped on top of equuipment on cart.

Accelerated Reader Books and Quizzes

Books with Multiple Copies

CD's/DVD's - We have square dancing CD's and a series of computer CD's dealing with American Business Leaders and American Cultural Leaders. We have 4 video DVD's, Moby Dick, To Kill A Mockingbird, , Call of the Wild and Learning HTML. We have very few of these but if you know of any we should purchase, let us know.

Magazines - We carry 60 plus magazines. They are here for your pleasure and may be checked out for three days by teachers and students. They are an escellent source of topic ideas for research papers and also for use during silent class reading time.

Newspapers - We carry the following newspapers in the media center - The Byron Gazette, The Leader Tribune, and The Macon Telegraph.

Videos Purchased - We have a comprehensive collection of hundreds of videos for use as classroom supplements.

Videos Taped - Come by the media center to browse this list. Also, check out the PeachStar location, http://www.gpb.org/peachstar. This is an excellent site for video streaming which lets you view or download to CD all or parts of videos you feel are important for your topic. They have a user guide and we'll be glad to help, too. You'll need a password and you can get it from the media center.

Policies

Challenged Materials,    Copyright,    Internet Usage,    Plagiarism,   Privacy,
Cybrary Web Site

Challenged Materials - Despite care taken to select valuable materials for student use, occasionally objections are raised as to the appropriateness of a selection. Criticisms must be submitted on the Request for Reconsideration of Materials form. This form must be completed in full and signed. Challenged material will not be removed automatically from a collection. When a selection is challenged through the submission of this form, the selection will be reviewed in light of the objections raised by the media committee.

Internet Usage

There is access to the Internet in the media center as well as the classroom. The Peach County School System requires students to take home a Internet Usage Contract form to share with their parents. This form must be signed by the student and his/her parent or guardian and returned to the school before the Internet may be accessed in the media center or class rooms. A copy of the form may be downloaded or you may obtain one from your student handbook or your advisor. This form must be signed and turned in before a student may obtain a student ID.
Student Internet use must be related to a class assignment made by a teacher.

Please remember...ACCESS IS A PRIVILEGE - NOT A RIGHT. Misuse of the privilege will result in cancellation of the student's Internet permission.

.

Plagiarism and Citations (ALA & MLA)

Taking the thoughts and words of others and presenting them as your own is called plagiarism and is against the law. It will also get you an extremely poor grade on your research paper or project.
Many people make their living through their ideas and writing and plagiarism is a form of stealing. In order to use others' words and ideas in an acceptable manner, it is important to give credit to the author. This is called citing the author. There are several formats to use to cite authors. ALA and MLA (the one used at PCHS) are among the most popular forms of citations.

.

Privacy

We strive to protect the rights of our patrons to privacy in regard to materials and information sought, consulted, and/or borrowed.
